About the role
Do you have a passion for science? Would you like a hands-on role in a laboratory? Then this brand-new apprenticeship could be for you!

Based in our state-of-the art Facility for Imaging by Light Microscopy and partner Departments, this apprenticeship focuses on microscopy, which is about using highly specialised microscopes to view objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

You do not need to know much about microscopes to apply, as we will teach you! Working alongside talented researchers and microscopy specialists, you will build the knowledge and skills needed to support world-class teaching and research, kickstarting your technical career.

What you would be doing
As our apprentice, you will experience a range of cutting-edge microscopy facilities and techniques. You will be trained by colleagues to operate state-of-the-art equipment and to help others to do so. You will complete a series of 6-month training rotations, starting in our Facility for Imaging by Light Microscopy. This will be underpinned by a special programme of fortnightly practical and classroom-based sessions, fully aligned to the level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship standard. As well as earning a competitive salary, you will build a range of technical skills and gain a formal qualification that will help you in your future career.

What we are looking for
Applicants will need (or expect to gain) grade 9–4 (A*-C) at GCSE in English, Maths and Science. No prior work experience is required. We are looking for people who are passionate about science; to be considered for interview, applicants must tell us in their application about their science interests.

Due to apprenticeship funding rules, applicants should not have a degree-level qualification in a STEM discipline.

What we can offer you
Kickstart your technical career at a world-leading university.
Gain a fully funded level 3 science qualification and real-life workplace experience.
Learn to use the latest equipment and techniques in light microscopy while supporting cutting-edge scientific research.
Competitive starting salary and benefits.
