About the role
Are you seeking an academic appointment in a friendly and visionary department, discovering how Earth and planetary systems work and how we can support the energy transition and a zero-carbon and zero pollution future? The Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London has the exciting opportunity to appoint to 6 permanent academic positions, at the level of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer or Reader depending upon experience, to compliment and enrich our teaching and research activities and expand our multidisciplinary community.
Your interest may lie in any area of Earth Science and Engineering that links to any aspect of our three strategic focus areas for this search:
Climate and environment, including sustainability
Energy and resources in the context of the energy transition, including raw materials, critical metals, circular economy, geometallurgy, renewable energy and energy storage
Artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science
We particularly welcome applications from groups who are currently underrepresented in these fields in the UK including people from Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds and women. These are full-time, open-ended (tenured) academic positions.
What you would be doing
You should be motivated to join a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, perform original research, and write research funding bids. You will have the scope to teach on our popular undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses, work with our enthusiastic students and be supported by a community united in the desire to make a difference in this world.
Research in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering is wide-ranging and across five broad themes: Climate & Environment, Energy & Resources, Life & Health, Earth Processes & Geohazards, and Planetary Science. All areas deploy and advance digital technologies such as computational modelling, AI, remote sensing, and data science.
We house a strong offering of geochemical facilities, computing infrastructure and technical support, access to a wide range of internal and external facilities supporting groundbreaking research, and closely collaborate with our neighbours at the Natural History Museum.
Our teaching portfolio combines the traditional and the pioneering with undergraduate programmes in Earth and Planetary Science, Geology and Geophysics, and postgraduate courses in Metals and Energy Finance, and multiple computational subjects including: Applied Computational Science and Engineering, Environmental Data Science and Machine Learning, Geo-Energy with Machine Learning and Data Science and Renewable Energy with AI and Data Science: Geology & Geophysics.
To underline our commitment to educating a diverse cohort of scientists and engineers, we are establishing The Ada Lovelace Academy – the umbrella for our computationally based MSc programmes – which seeks to help overcome the underrepresentation of women in engineering by achieving gender equity across these courses by 2030.

Collaborative minds with an ability to build and sustain effective working relationships, both internally and externally
Evidence of contribution to the development and performance of colleagues through coaching, mentoring, and advancing equality, diversity and inclusion
