Technician Maternity Cover to join the multi-disciplined ACE Prototyping and Manufacturing Workshop Team at the The Dyson School of Design EngineeringAbout the role
The Dyson School of Design Engineering is the 10th and newest engineering department at Imperial College London. The School brings together traditional engineering disciplines with areas such as behavioural science, design thinking, ethics, and business model innovation, to foster creativity and rigour in a single engineering discipline. The School is unique in its delivery of joint degrees with the Royal College of Art.

We are hiring a Technician Maternity Cover to join our multi-disciplined ACE Prototyping and Manufacturing Workshop Team who will be responsible to the Technical Services and Safety Officer. The purpose of the post is to provide essential support to the ACE Workshop where students and staff are learning state of the art workshop skills and utilise these in their degrees and individual projects. The facilities provide technical support for exciting entrepreneurial prototyping activities within teaching, research and any other activities associated with Design Engineering.

 

What you would be doing
The post holder will be part of a technical team and will be responsible to the Technical Services and Safety Manager. You will provide an engineering consultancy, design and production service to departmental users, this also includes the instruction and teaching of prototyping and manufacturing techniques including hands-on teaching of workshop skills on manual machines to workshop users of all abilities.

Workshop Duties

Manufacture components from a variety of materials to a high level of accuracy, operating both manual machines and CNC operated equipment.
Provide technical support, advice and demonstration in manufacturing and prototyping to workshop users of all abilities. This includes a variety of manual machines from wood working to metal working as well as CNC operated equipment and hand tools associated with the workshop, exhibiting a professional level of skills and ability in woods, metals and plastics in a multi-disciplined workshop.
To monitor and assist with activities carried out in the workshop, ensuring and promoting a high standard of health and safety practices.
To perform routine housekeeping tasks, ensuring that the workshop facilities are well maintained and tidy.
Provide induction and supervision to workshop users, ensuring compliance of workshop procedures

What we are looking for
We are looking for someone educated to at least BTEC HNC or equivalent, with completion of a recognised engineering apprenticeship-training scheme and proven experience in:

working at a multi-discipline workshop, preferably within a teaching environment
use of traditional engineering machines and hand tools
use of CADCAM software
use of CNC, 3D printing and Laser cutter equipment
The postholder should be familiar with mechanical workshop practices and workshop instrumentation and have a good understanding of Workplace Health & Safety regulations and procedures. Alongside excellent practical skills and ability to apply relevant techniques and methods you should have good interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with other support services members, technical, academic, teaching staff, students and external contacts.
