Ohio State’s Department of Public Safety is hiring University Law Enforcement Officer Trainees to join the Police Division. ULEOTs will attend police academy post-hire to obtain an Ohio Peace Officer Certification. Once certified, Trainees, will then promote into University Law Enforcement Officers who will focus on safety of the university community as the top priority and provide physical security for various campus locations. Officers demonstrate stellar customer service as they engage with the community to provide a physical security presence, conduct high-visibility patrols, protect valuable property and provide general assistance.

Under close supervision from a University Law Enforcement Officer Supervisor or higher-level supervisor, the University Law Enforcement Officer Trainee attends the prescribed training to learn the principles, practices and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement and codified and case law. The trainee also receives training in report writing, physical fitness techniques, firearm use and maintenance, and arrest and control techniques. Under close supervision, may assist other police officers with the performance of their duties. This is a non-sworn, officer-in-training position. Candidates selected for this position will attend an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy post-hire.



Required Qualifications
Minimum Class Requirements:
Minimum age 20 years, six months at time of hire. Valid unrestricted Ohio operator’s license upon appointment. Minimum sixty (60) semester credit hours of documented college coursework. Must successfully complete medical/visual, psychological, physical performance evaluations, polygraph, and other pre-employment requirements prescribed by the University and police department prior to appointment, and possibly thereafter. No conviction record for felony or crime of moral turpitude.

Unusual Working Conditions:
Subject to 24-hour call in. May work evenings and weekends. May have to chase, tackle and engage suspects. Must annually qualify with firearm. May have to reside at training academy.

Desired Qualifications

Desired minimum completion of 60 credit hours of college level coursework.

The hiring range for this position is $33.66/hr for the first 6 months while attending academy. Will move into officer pay rate upon successfully obtaining Ohio Peace Officer Certification.
